Progress has been made in the master bedroom. We've brought in the stainless steel shelf unit that had been a big eyesore in the dining room (it doesn't really belong in here either, but at least I don't have to see it every day) and my mom was good enough to get rid of some of her clothes. I've been tossing (recycling) a lot of the papers that were floating around in there, some of which had become infested with yucky carpet beetles---you better believe that carpet was filthy before I got the vacuum in there. I'm tempted to just throw the rest of the stuff in a box (or maybe 20 boxes, or 50) and drop it all off at Goodwill, except that I know my mom will come back for a visit one day and say, "what happened to my unusable telephone with the frayed wire?" or "why'd you get rid of that pile of broken picture frames? I was going to use those!" So I've only been getting rid of the things that I'm pretty sure she's forgotten about and wouldn't miss, and that we couldn't possibly have any use for in the near future. It's still not that presentable, but it looks great compared to how it was in July and December of last year:

Makes me tired, just looking at those pictures!

You are doing such a great job! Seeing your photos of transformation are incredible. My mom is a "collector of things" too - and I do believe she has turned my dad into a bit of a pack rat as well. Mostly decorative items and clothing. Everytime I go home, I shudder to think of how much work I will have ahead of me someday.
It is such a great investment of your time to go through this! We just moved and I got rid of A LOT of stuff -- kid clothes to younger kids, toys to the thrift shop, books to the secondhand bookstore, various items to Goodwill... and we have much more to go through still. I'm purging again with each box we unpack. Thanks for the inspiration to get back into another box. :)
I just found your blog (linked from your comment on Posie Gets Cozy...I love learning who else follows Alicia online). Love your pages! As soon as I get a chance, I want to read about your projects...in reverse order. :)
You are seriously amazing. I hope your family appreciates all the hard work you've put into decluttering.
I'm even more curious about the story behind it all. Did you ever blog it all out?
